Friday's Mega Millions jackpot builds to $187,000,000; Two second prize tickets sold

With no winner in the last drawing, the Mega Millions lottery jackpot will be worth $187,000,000 (lump-sum cash payout $$91 million) the next time the multistate lottery is played on Friday. The amount carried over since nobody matched all five white ball numbers plus the Mega Ball number to win the $165,000,000 grand prize Tuesday night. The winning numbers drawn Tuesday night, January 9th, 2024 were 12, 15, 32, 33, 53 and the Mega Ball was 24, Megaplier was 3. The Mega Millions jackpot has been rolling over for nine draws since Tuesday, December 12th, 2023.

Though the jackpot was not awarded Tuesday evening, some people still walked away with huge prizes. There were two lucky winners matched the first five numbers but missed Mega Ball number, which won the 2nd prize. The two second prize winning ticket(s) purchased in CA(2) won a quarter million dollar cash each.

Additional prizes won Tuesday night included 12 tickets that matched four white ball numbers plus the Mega Ball and won $10,000. In addition, 257 tickets matched 4 of the 5 lotto numbers. Those tickets are each worth $500. There were 694 tickets that matched 3 white ball numbers as well as the Mega Ball and also won $200.

With 9 different prize levels, there were a total of 1,084,992 winning tickets sold across U.S. in the Tuesday, January 9th, 2024 drawing.

Mega Millions is a consortium of 44 state lotteries. Approximately 50% of the Mega Millions sales goes back on the players through prize winnings. Approximately 15% goes to retailer commissions and lottery operating costs. Around 35% total sales is used in government services, education and charities in the participating states. The minimum Mega Millions jackpot is 40 million dollar. Its annuity option is paid in 30 equal annual payments. Winners can select one time lump sum cash payout instead.
